Winter Warmth Appeal 2011 by Lionel Blair
When I agreed to become a Patron of The British Polio Fellowship I said that I will do everything I can to raise awareness of the work of their work and this is why when I was asked to support their Winter Warmth Appeal, I was very happy to do so.
We all know only too well what it is like to feel the cold during the winter months. People living with Polio and Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) feel the cold more than most so need to keep the temperature of their heating at home higher than most of us need to. Turning up the dial just one notch on the heating means that heating costs go up by 8%. British Polio members who need to have their heating turned up really high have higher than average heating bills, and with heating costs rising substantially every year, this becomes a very worrying prospect of how such costs can be met every winter, especially to those who are under 60 and do not receive the government’s winter fuel allowance.
British Polio strives to support all people with Polio and PPS living in the UK and each year raises funds for those people who are struggling to keep their homes warm and may experience more hardship than others.
To enable us to give grants to our members we need to raise funds from Trusts each year, sell advertising space in the bulletin and generate income through both internet sales and working successfully with generous Partner organisations. In total, we aim to raise £30,000 each year to be able to provide this essential support for our members.
The British Polio Fellowship does not receive any Government funding for its work and in order to continue to improve and extend its services it still needs your help and is reliant on the generosity of its members and supporters.
