As we go to press on this edition of The Bulletin, we can break some exciting news in the form of outline plans for British Polio Month 2013, to take place in July. The finer detail is being confirmed as we speak, but what we can say is that we are looking to engage with Branches and members all over the country and to provide a national focal point in London that can be capitalised upon and shared by all members, with the benefit being felt out in all the regions.
The campaign theme will be “120,000 reasons”, and will focus on compelling imagery and personal stories to inform and remind the public that PPS and Polio are things that people are living with on a daily basis in the UK, despite the popular perception that “Polio is not a problem here any more”.
A visually interesting national photo-shoot will be organised, with opportunities for this to be replicated on a smaller scale in the regions and attract interest from your regional media under the guidance of our PR agency. Fundraising activity is planned around the national photo- shoot; we can’t confirm exactly where it will be as yet, but needless to say we are working on a high- profile location that will capture the imagination.
Apart from raising awareness in the public domain and raising further funds, we plan to use British Polio Month as a platform and a focus for lobbying MPs both nationally and locally, and to further educate GPs about PPS following last year’s GPs’ survey. As there is still a terrible lack of awareness with GPs, British Polio Month is the ideal opportunity for the charity and members to press home the message with GPs again, and we will be suggesting letter templates for you to contact your local GPs and MPs in the next edition of The Bulletin.
If you already have events planned for July or if you wish to run any of your own fundraising events in July to give a focus during British Polio Month, that would be fantastic! As soon as more information becomes available on British Polio Month, we will of course let you know. In the meantime, try to keep July free in your diaries.
