The British Polio Fellowship provides a dedicated Helpline to support our members with help and advice, helping them to recognise their symptoms and to understand how to deal with them effectively. We also have a Disability Benefits Advisor who guides our members through what benefits they are entitled to and to help them with the arduous task of filling out the very complicated forms.
Each year our Support Services team handle around 3,000 calls, covering a wide range of topics from giving advice e.g. physiotherapists, orthotics or just being there at the end of the phone to give practical guidance and, when needed, a shoulder to cry on. Resulting from these calls, they have sent out 5,600 emails, letters and publications. This is an increase of 25% year on year.
“Just to say a massive thank you for all your help and support over the past five weeks especially. You are a life line – a precious and very necessary life line. I’ve had, and am having, swallowing/speech problems which have been exacerbated by a recent chest infection. You spoke to me a couple of times during those weeks, giving me advice, support, encouragement and information. It is so much appreciated, thank you. I saw the speech therapist. Yesterday. She was amazing and I gave her and my GP the information you sent me, both received it with openness and eagerness. They were both very interested, so it was a very positive outcome. Thank you so much. EE 16/02/12.
“I am writing to thank you for helping me over the telephone with my benefits. I am pleased to tell you that I have now received my badge for my brother’s car so that he can park in a disabled bay, it will be very helpful to me as I cannot walk far.” RJ02/08/12
“I suffer from Post Polio Syndrome and have recently applied for Care Component with the most helpful assistance of your Benefits Advisor, without whom we would have not been able to complete the form. The outcome is that I now receive the DLA Care Component at the middle rate” 14/05/12
These are just three of the many comments we receive from our very grateful members. Every hour our Helpline and Information Service is open costs over £50. Your gift can help us answer the next time one of our members desperately needs our support.
