First accessible footbridge to be installed in Suffolk town

Stowmarket railway station in Suffolk will soon feature a state-of-the-art accessible footbridge. The station is set to become the first in the UK to install the innovative ‘AVA’ bridge, equipped with fully-operational lifts.

The £5.5 million project is funded by the Government’s Access for All scheme, as the only step-free route between platforms currently is via the level crossing. The project includes replacing the existing concrete footbridge with the new structure.

Constructed from stainless steel, the bridge is durable and requires no painting. Its modular design and "plug-and-play" lifts significantly reduce on-site installation time by over half, minimizing disruption for passengers and the local community.

Designed by ARX, the creators of Wimbledon’s movable roofs, the lifts feature a simplified installation process and enhanced durability. They incorporate built-in resilience and redundancy to minimize the risk of service disruptions.

Stowmarket's ‘AVA Bridge’ is due to open in summer next year.
