Mental Health

The polio community is amazing and often shows incredible resilience. It always seems to find a way to adapt, stay positive, and keep going. Even when things get tough. But that doesn’t mean for some, it’s easy. As a polio survivor, you might be facing some unique mental health challenges that are being overlooked.

You could be dealing with anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress. These issues can be connected to your early experience with polio, the long-term physical effects of polio, and the everyday realities of living with a disability.

A lack of understanding by healthcare professionals and negative reactions from others will make things even harder.

Experiencing polio as a child or adult might have been traumatic. Being isolated, going through painful treatments, and facing physical limitations can leave lasting emotional scars.

Facing stigma or feeling like others don’t understand your condition can be incredibly isolating. That sense of being “different” or misunderstood can really impact self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.

Then later in life, if you go on to develop Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), it could bring back symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and pain. This will be a huge blow, emotionally and mentally, leading to feelings of anxiety, stress, and sometimes depression. Chronic pain, limited mobility, and constant fatigue don’t just take a physical toll, they also affect your mental health.

As PPS progresses, you may struggle with changes in what you can do physically. That adjustment can be difficult and bring with it feelings of frustration or sadness.

But remember, you aren’t alone. Talking to a mental health professional, joining a support group, or connecting with an organisation like the British Polio Fellowship, can make an enormous difference. You just need to take that first step.

If you’re feeling low, anxious or finding it difficult to cope with the emotional impact of living with polio or PPS
