Managing Pain and Fatigue
There is no cure for Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), but there are ways to manage symptoms and ease them to maintain a good quality of life:
- Managing pain (aching muscles, joint pain, cramps, or even sharp spasms): Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or paracetamol might help.
- Saving energy: Learning to pace yourself, rest often (even before you feel tired), and use helpful aids (like walkers) can prevent burnout.
- Staying active (but gently): Light, tailored exercise (e.g. swimming) and gentle stretching can help with stiffness, but don’t overdo it otherwise you could feel worse.
- Using mobility aids: Things like walking sticks, walkers, orthotics, or wheelchairs can take pressure off your joints and make moving around easier and safer.
- Healthy habits: Eating well, staying at a healthy weight, and managing stress can make a difference. Staying hydrated will also boost your energy levels.
