Captain Cusack: England’s rising star achieves silver at Glasgow 2026

Peter Cusack brought a wealth of international experience to Team England’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball squad as it chased Commonwealth Games success in Glasgow this summer (23 July to 2 August).

He missed out on the bronze medal England won at the previous Games, but Cusack has since risen to become one of the sport’s leading figures. The Coventry-born athlete claimed silver with Great Britain at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris and again at the 2025 European Championships, cementing his status among the world’s best.

Cusack took charge as captain, leading a squad that includes James Hazell, Tom Harvey and Oscar Knight, with gold firmly in their sights. It wasn’t easy in a tightly contested group, but the squad walked away with a silver medal after being beaten 19-13 by Australia in the final.

3×3 basketball has grown rapidly since its introduction at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and now holds a firm place on both the Olympic and Commonwealth Games schedules.

Cusack’s path into the sport started in 2012, following a Paralympic sports day he attended at Stoke Mandeville. A polio survivor and member of the British Polio Fellowship, he advanced rapidly, joining Great Britain’s world-class junior programme in 2015.

That early promise has since become international success, with silver in Paris and a runner-up finish at the 2025 Europeans making him one of the players England can lean on in the future.
