Welfare Grant
The Welfare Grant provides practical help for home adaptations, mobility aids, or essential equipment that supports independence, comfort, and safety at home.
What it can cover:
- Home adaptations such as handrails, ramps, or stairlifts
- Mobility aids including wheelchairs, scooters, or hoists
- Specialist furniture or household items that improve accessibility or wellbeing
Who can apply:
Polio survivors living in the UK who are current members of the British Polio Fellowship and have not received a Welfare Grant within the last two years. Applicants should be able to demonstrate financial need.
Grant amount: £500 (maximum)

Case Study
David is a long-term BPF member who contracted polio in 1953, which has had a lasting impact on his mobility. Over the years, he has adapted to living with the late effects of polio, including post-polio syndrome and remains determined to stay independent and socially active. However, as time has passed, certain everyday tasks have become more challenging.
David recently received a welfare grant for a car hoist – his first ever grant application. Lifting his wheelchair into his car had become increasingly difficult. While he enjoys socialising and being out in the community, public transport options like buses and trains are not always accessible, so having a reliable way to manage his wheelchair was essential.
The car hoist has made a significant difference to David’s daily life. It allows him to load his wheelchair into his car safely and independently, reducing physical strain and giving him greater freedom to travel. As he describes it, “The hoist is really helping me to get out and about.” With the BPF’s support, David has been able to do more social activities and keep his independence.
